Turning a Knot into a Dragon

Here we have a little knot that I created. To turn this into a Dragon, find a place in the knot that makes the most sense visually to “break” the knotwork pattern. The break is where the head and tail will meet when it becomes a Dragon. In this example, I’ve chosen to make my break at the top of this particular knot. I think the top will show off the little dragon-to-be better than if I had broken it at the bottom, side, or middle.

Here you can see the knot with the Dragon head added, and his tail brought up and around under his chin. The knot or body of the Dragon was tapered where it came to the tail, as in the Snake-into-a-Dragon section. On this Dragon I have also added a crest, which is of course optional. Because the knot I chose was fairly thick, there wasn’t a whole lot of work to make it into a Dragon. A really thin knotwork design might have required making the body thicker in the Dragon’s middle again to give him that “belly bulge,” but he looks okay as he is here so I’ll leave it.
